Mariam Azin, Ph.D., President

Azin, Founder and President of PRES Associates, Inc., holds a Ph.D. in Applied Social Psychology from the Claremont Graduate School.  With over twenty years of experience in the field of research and evaluation, Dr. Azin has been principal investigator on numerous national, state and local evaluation efforts related to a broad range of topics including:  curriculum and instruction; at-risk learners; school climate; educational technology and distance learning; literacy, math and science; career and technical education; professional development; mental health; substance use; and criminal justice. Dr. Azin has particular expertise in the areas of quantitative and qualitative research methods, research design, advanced statistical analyses; survey development; group facilitation; assessment and measurement; design of electronic data collection systems; and large-scale, multi-site data collection.

As example of the types of research and evaluation studies she has conducted, Dr. Azin served as joint principal investigator on the evaluation of three federal Safe Schools/Healthy Students projects, each consisting of multi-agency initiatives (health, education and criminal justice) designed to provide services to at-risk youth and their families.  Dr. Azin has also served as principal investigator on more than a dozen large-scale, national randomized control trials and quasi-experiments designed to ascertain the effects of various educational programs and curricula, several of which were reviewed by the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) and found to fully meet evidence standards. She is also the evaluator for federally-funded Carl D. Perkins career and technical education programs, including development and psychometric analyses of state technical skill assessments.

Among her honors, Dr. Azin was the recipient of a Bureau of Justice Statistics fellowship to conduct research on the relationship between sentencing patterns and composition of prison populations.  Prior to founding PRES Associates, Dr. Azin was a principal researcher at Mid-Content Research for Education and Learning (McREL) in Denver, Colorado, and served as the research coordinator for the Center for Applied Social and Policy Research in Claremont, California.
